Q: Why did you decide to live on a sailboat?
A: We have owned sailboats since 2012. While chartering a sailboat in the British Virgin Islands in 2018, Rebecca apparently said, “I could live on a sailboat.” Somehow, the idea stuck and we began to seriously think about the idea of living on a sailboat and weighed our options for the next year and a half to two before selling our home.
Q: Is it expensive to live on a sailboat?
A: The sailboat lifestyle can be as lavish or humble as you make it. A large part of this will depend on whether you can purchase your boat outright or need a boat loan. If you live at a marina, you will pay a monthly fee for your boat slip, plus electricity more than likely. If you’re cruising, you’ll be anchoring for free or paying a nominal nightly fee for a mooring ball. We’ve found our monthly expenses are substantially cheaper than paying a mortgage.
Q: What is the hardest part about living on a boat?
A: There have been days with storms coming through that the boat will rock incessantly. This can make it hard to sleep at night and has caused Rebecca to feel light-headed at times, but usually some fluids and snacks help! Rebecca takes care of grocery shopping, so picking up groceries, loading the groceries into a dock cart, and hauling them onto the boat isn’t the most fun! Laundry day requires a bit of a hike back and forth to the laundromat, but it’s great exercise!
Q: What is the best part about living on a boat?
A: We love stepping out into the cockpit every morning to smell the salty air and take in the sunshine. We love that we have the freedom to move our house whenever we want and see a new place. We love the savings and the ability to do more of what we want to do.
