There is so much to love about Martha’s Vineyard. Quintessentially New England from its harbors and homes and hydrangeas, it’s always a must-stop for us. Many years ago, in spring 2017, we spent a day on the island, crossing over from the mainland on the ferry. We took the bus all over the island, exploring Oak Bluffs, Edgartown, several of the lighthouses, and getting a general overview in the limited time we had. When we revisited in summer 2021, we anchored in both Tisbury (Lagoon Pond behind the drawbridge) and Edgartown. We again took the bus all over the island, but finally visited the southwestern side, including the cute fishing village of Menemsha and Aquinnah, the site of beautiful cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. (We definitely hope to anchor/moor on the Menemsha side sometime!)
On our most recent visit, we wanted to anchor in our favorite overall place on the island, so Edgartown it was. The primary outside anchorage is located just east of the Chappaquiddick Beach Club and is easy access in/out from the sea. There is a mooring field in Edgartown, but conditions were right for anchoring, which is always our first choice. As you dinghy into town, watch out for the Chappy ferry! It runs all day back and forth every few minutes and you will need to cross its path to get to the dinghy dock. Usage of the dinghy dock is free.

4 Things To Do in Edgartown:
Visit the iconic lighthouse and surrounding beach.

Enjoy local ice cream at one of the many ice cream shops.

Walk the town and check out the Cape Cod shingled homes. Look for the oldest home you can find. We saw homes from the early 1700’s!

Enjoy breakfast on the patio at Among the Flowers Cafe. They make a delicious bacon/egg/cheese sandwich on sourdough bread!
