Yes, we are super late on blogging some of our cruising adventures from last year, but New England is one of our favorite destinations and we’re always excited to share all that it has to offer. After cruising 2 days straight to Port Washington (and spending family time in New York City), we continued through Long Island to Block Island, the first stop in New England we were really eager to return to.
We know Block Island is special, but after having been away for 2 years, we couldn’t help but wonder if it would still feel just as ‘magical’ to us. There were a few restaurants that we knew we wanted to revisit and more walking around the main part of town. Block Island fills up with tourists in the summer months. We were there in late June, and were pleasantly surprised at how much room was available in the anchorage and how few dinghies were parked at the dinghy dock. We highly recommend visiting in the earlier part of the season if possible.
We didn’t do any long hikes this visit. In 2021, we took a cab to Mohegan Bluffs on the southeastern side of Block Island. It was a super long walk that we knew we wouldn’t want to do both ways, but we did walk home. The views from the cliff are incredible. Situated next to the South East Lighthouse, there are one hundred plus steps down to the beach below, so wear comfy walking shoes. Take a stroll down the beach and think about the grim history that took place here in the mid 1500’s, when a battle between two Native American tribes forced one tribe over the edge of the cliffs to their deaths. Now named after the tribe that was defeated, the Mohegan Bluffs face the threat of erosion from the mighty waves of the Atlantic Ocean.
